The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari – Book by Robin Sharma June 27, 2011

This book has been written many years ago, and I’ve always seen it at bookstores. But it never got into my hand. Until this time. I’ve always wonder what it was about. But maybe because of the title contains the word ‘monk’, it a bit turn me offish, to tell you the truth. But after reading it, it’s not about religious, but about humanity. The knowledge inside it, overcome religious boundaries. It’s about finding the live that we have always wanted, but never know how to get it. It’s about getting peace. The elusive peace with yourself.

When I started reading it, I thought that this was taken from a real story. But after a while, you would notice that this could never be true. It’s just the way Robin Sharma wrote it. He made it like a fable, and thus making it much more interesting. You’ve taken into a world that is made real. It’s easier for you to imagine the teaching that he want to give to us.

I liked the way he presented his ideas. It’s a universal truth ideas, really. You’ve probably already read it somewhere else, but by giving an example such as Julian Mantle, Robin was like telling us that it can be done. Someone here has done it, and his name is Julian Mantle.

He’s also gave a mnemonic way how to easily remember the teaching of the Sages of Sivana. with the story of the garden, and in the garden there’s a lighthouse… etc. even I can remember the teaching now.

It’s a good book to be read again and again so that you can understand and remember the techniques given in the books. Happy reading, you all!

Loved you once, love you still. Always have, always will. -Mary Schmich
–> lovers out there. Remember this the next time you write to your spouse a birthday card. Or you screw up and want to make amends. Thank me later.

God made woman beautiful and foolish; beautiful, that man might love her; and foolish, that she might love him. -Anon
–> it’s an insult and also a complement at the same time. More of a complement to me, really. And it really means if women were smart, they’d stay clear from us. Ha ha.

Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm. -Winston Churchill
–> problem is, with failure there are consequences that we have to face. I wish that there would be someone out there that can give you some pick-me-up when you screw up. And screw up you will. As Kasparov said: Mistakes are all waiting to be made.

Love is like a violin. The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever. -J.M. Bacher
–> sweet.

The average person thinks he isn’t. Father Larry Lorenzoni
–> don’t you hate it when you meet someone who doesn’t know too much but blabbers anyway? Then you have feign interest and all the thinking of an exit strategy. Gosh, I hope I’m not one of those people. I got a fair share of meeting people like that.

I can’t give you a surefire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time. —HERBERT BAYARD SWOPE, American editor and journalist; first recipient of the Pulitzer Prize
–> this is probably the first quote I remember. I love it so much. And I remember who quoted it. A rare occasion that one. I usually remember the quote verbatim, but names are hard. So usually I just fake any names. But I just re-found this quote and I’m glad to know that mr Herbert is the first recipient of the coveted Pulitzer prize! Sweet!

Law was made for one thing alone; for the exploitation of those who do not understand it – Bertolt Brecht
–> one of the lawyer jokes. Being a legal student in the past, of course I’m interested in quotes like this. I know that many common people are not comfortable with lawyers and legal gobbledegook. The most harsh I’ve ever heard is this: what do you call ten lawyers tied together at the bottom of the sea?
Answer: a bloody good start!

–> I’m sure to use this quote to boost someone else’s spirit. But it really is hard sometimes to find a solution.

–> a positive spin to say by those that forget easily like. Tho in my case, instead of making fresh start, I’d be making fresh new mistakes!

–> isn’t that just cute?

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
—ALBERT EINSTEIN
–> i haven’t come to the realization that Einstein is talking about here. But I kinda understand it a bit. You would have to read Harunyahya’s take in the Matrix movies to begin to understand it.

The tongue has no bones, yet it breaks bones. -Greek Proverb.
Tongue never broke my bones yet, but there are incidents where it broke my heart.

It’s easier to stay silent than to fake a smile. –> oh how true. Sometimes I hate myself for giving a fake smile. Because I know that I really really hate what’s going on and what someone said that forced that smile, but I have to smile anyway.

Apologizing is like whiteout. It covers up the mistake, but it never totally goes away. –> but sometimes it’s the only noble thing to do. Let’s try not to make mistakes in the first place. But easy said that done.

The world most beautiful sentence: “But I love you.” The world’s most painful sentence: “I love you but…” -Vea Mariz. –> have you said any of this before?

alfatiha study September 1, 2009

the internet is a lovely thing if you want to look for knowledge including islamic ones.

i’ve gone through an mini course on hadith by Imam Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips where there’s a wealth of knowledge on the science of hadith. you can download the mini course here.

now I’m listening to a course on understanding ummul kitab alfatiha. you can download the khutbah here

I mean it is the most well read surah in the quran and we should try to find out what it means. at least 17 times a day. and al Fatihah is probably the most well read and well memorized bu the muslims. so should not we all study this surah that we keep repeating over and over again?

the speaker is Sheikh Jamaludin Zarabozo, a Mualaf from America. he sounded very intelligent and knowledgeable. I just found out that he never went to the arab countries for islamic studies. he just learnt islam from the teachers that were in US.

i’ll try to blog what i’ve learnt in the khutbah. it is more of a self-note to me instead of teaching you readers anything. because I would not do justice to the teaching if you rely on

he started by mentioning the importance of the surah which is of course very important indeed. and a bit of history of the surah. it is the first surah which was revealed in its entirety. and it was revealed quite early in the islamic period.

1. then he delved into the meaning of basmalah. now this might be the most mentioned quranic verse that we utter in our waking lifes. and should we not grasp the true meaning of it?

basmalah actually not a complete phrase in arabic sentence and because of that, the verse can be utilized in all aspects of our lives. that’s one the magic of basmalah.

and he touched on the meaning of the Ba’ in bismillah. with using the letter ba’, it gives us the understanding that only to Allah that we ask for blessings and only from Him that we asked for assistance.

and when we use the name or asma’ of arrahman and arrahim, we emphasis the the attributes of compassionate of Allah.

he continues that the Name Allah is the Name that encompass all the attributes of Allah.

and when Allah uses the attributes of arrahman and arrahim, He is introducing Himself as a compassionate Being and upon that, we say the following verse which is alhamdulillah.

some scholars of the opinion that arrahman and arrahim is from the same root word and by using both names, He is emphasizing or highlighting his compassion.

but the arabic word seldom have perfect synonyms or no synonyms at all. thus the opinion that when Allah use the two names, it’s actually carrying two different meaning. the most widely accepted understanding of the differences is: ar-Rahman is general mercy and bounty that Allah gives to everyone and everything. But the ar-Rahim is only given those beings that belief in Him.

2. Alhamd -

Robb -God. he is the maker and also the sustainer. He does not created the world and all that are in it, and then let it on it’s own. no. Allah continues to manage all affairs. there are nothing that escapes His attention.

Aalameen - it means the whole world encompassing everything that was created by Allah.

4. Maaliki yaum middin: Maali means the owner. and this kind of ownership is not like ownership in this world. like when we say that we are the owner of a car, perhaps. it is not actually total ownership, since the back might owns it actually. but we say that Allah is the owner, it really means total ownership. He can dispose with it any way he likes it.

another reading of that verse is: Malik which means: King. but this is not the same kingship as what we have in the world today. in this world, the king does not have total control. but Allah has total control of everything.

A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind July 17, 2009

Post written by Leo Babauta. culled from Zen habits

How many times have you gotten upset because someone wasn’t doing their job, because your child isn’t behaving, because your partner or friend isn’t living up to his or her end of the bargain?
How many times have you been irritated when someone doesn’t do things the way you’re used to? Or when you’ve planned something carefully and things didn’t go as you’d hoped?
This kind of anger and irritation happens to all of us — it’s part of the human experience.
One thing that irritates me is when people talk during a movie. Or cut me off in traffic. Or don’t wash their dishes after eating. Actually, I have a lot of these little annoyances — don’t we all?
And it isn’t always easy to find peace when you’ve become upset or irritated.
Let me let you in on a little secret to finding peace of mind: see the glass as already broken.
See, the cause of our stress, anger and irritation is that things don’t go the way we like, the way we expect them to. Think of how many times this has been true for you.
And so the solution is simple: expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different than we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen. And accept it.
One quick example: on our recent trip to Japan, I told my kids to expect things to go wrong — they always do on a trip. I told them, “See it as part of the adventure.”
And this worked like a charm. When we inevitably took the wrong train on a foreign-language subway system, or when it rained on the day we went to Disney Sea, or when we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children’s Castle closed on Mondays … they said, “It’s part of the adventure!” And it was all OK — we didn’t get too bothered.
So when the nice glass you bought inevitably falls and breaks, someday, you might get upset. But not if you see the glass as already broken, from the day you get it. You know it’ll break someday, so from the beginning, see it as already broken. Be a time-traveler, or someone with time-traveling vision, and see the future of this glass, from this moment until it inevitably breaks.
And when it breaks, you won’t be upset or sad — because it was already broken, from the day you got it. And you’ll realize that every moment you have with it is precious.
Expect your child to mess up — all children do. And don’t get so upset when they mess up, when they don’t do what they’re “supposed” to do … because they’re supposed to mess up.
Expect your partner to be less than perfect.
Expect your friend to not show up sometimes.
Expect things to go not according to plan.
Expect people to be rude sometimes.
Expect coworkers not to come through sometimes.
Expect roommates not to wash their dishes or pick up their clothes, sometimes.
Expect the glass to break.
And accept it.
You won’t change these inevitable facts — they will happen, eventually. And if you expect it to happen — even see it as already happening, before it happens — you won’t get so upset.
You won’t overreact. You’ll respond appropriately, but not overreact. You can talk to the person about their behavior, and ask them kindly to consider your feelings when they do this … but you won’t get overly emotional and blow things out of proportion.
You’ll smile, and think, “I expected that to happen. The glass was already broken. And I accept that.”
You’ll have peace of mind. And that, my friends, is a welcome surprise.

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak hero of Islam April 21, 2009

Another lesser known Hero of Islam is Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak. He’s not known to me, at least.

Another splendid man in the history of Islam. He hails from Khorasan and frm the time of Imam Malik because there was a story of him visiting Imam Malik where Imam Malik consulted him when there were questions from the students.

One character that interest me the most about him is his bravery. he was not only a scholar but he was also a fighter. He used to join the war against the non-muslims and he was a great fighter. But when he valiantly, he concealed himself so that no one knows who he was.

And he was rather wealthy. He used to pay for hajj his entire village with his money and paid for war expeditions for those that did not have the money to do so.

Wish that we hear a lot more of people like him.
